Unit 1: Introduction to Nepal· 4 LHs· ~5 marks

Pass path: Master definitions of Physiographic Diversity, Religious Syncretism, and Lumbini Sacred Garden in Part 1. Top path: Diagram Tri-Zonal Tourism Resource Model of Nepal, contrast Mountain Tourism Himal vs Terai Wildlife Tourism Madhesh in Part 3, and solve the Analyzing the Economic Impact of Inbound Tourism on Nepal ladder in Part 4.

Part 1: Core Concepts (2 Marks)

  • ★ Physiographic Diversity: Nepal spans from 60 meters above sea level (Jhapa/Kachankawal) to 8,848.86 meters (Mount Everest) within an average width of only 193 kilometers, creating 5 distinct climatic zones from subtropical to arctic.
  • Religious Syncretism: The unique spiritual harmony in Nepal where Hindus and Buddhists co-worship at the same shrines (e.g., Muktinath temple in Mustang, Swayambhunath, and Rato Macchindranath in Patan).
  • Lumbini (Sacred Garden): The UNESCO World Heritage site situated in Rupandehi district, scientifically verified by Emperor Ashoka’s 249 BC pillar inscription as the authentic birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (Lord Buddha).
  • Foreign Exchange Inflow: Inbound tourist spending (hotels, flights, permits, handicrafts) generating critical hard foreign currency reserves held by Nepal Rastra Bank.
  • Micro-Climate Variety: Nepal’s extreme topography creates radical micro-climates where subtropical orange groves thrive within sight of snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

Part 2: Structural Frameworks (10 Marks)

The Tri-Zonal Tourism Resource Model of Nepal

GEOGRAPHIC TOURISM PROFILE OF NEPAL

  1. MOUNTAIN ZONE (Himal: > 3,300m)
  • 8 of world’s 14 highest peaks (> 8,000m); Sagarmatha, Annapurna, K2...
  • Core Activities: High-altitude mountaineering, trekking, Sherpa culture.
  • v
  1. HILL ZONE (Pahad: 600m - 3,300m)
  • Kathmandu Valley heritage hubs, Pokhara lakes, Bandipur, Tansen.
  • Core Activities: Cultural sightseeing, paragliding, day hikes, MICE.
  • v
  1. TERAI ZONE (Madhesh: 60m - 600m)
  • Alluvial fertile plains, subtropical jungles (Chitwan, Bardiya, Shuklaphanta)
  • Core Activities: Jungle safaris (One-horned rhino), Tharu culture, Lumbini.

Part 3: Distinction Tables

Basis of Comparison Mountain Tourism (Himal) Terai Wildlife Tourism (Madhesh)
Primary Attractions Glaciers, 8,000m peaks, high passes, monasteries. Dense Sal forests, grasslands, rhinos, Bengal tigers.
Target Demographic Fit adventurers, mountaineers, active trekkers. Families, wildlife photographers, senior leisure tourists.
Seasonality Sharp peaks (Spring: Mar–May; Autumn: Oct–Nov). Milder seasonality; popular throughout autumn and winter.
Physical Demands Extreme; risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Low physical exertion; jeep safaris and elephant safaris.
Key Destinations Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang. Sauraha (Chitwan), Thakurdwara (Bardiya).

Part 4: Worked Problems & Exam Traps

★ Analyzing the Economic Impact of Inbound Tourism on Nepal

  1. Forex Cushion: Buffers Nepal’s chronic merchandise trade deficit with India and third countries.
  2. Rural Livelihood Dispersal: Trekking injects cash directly into remote off-road villages (Namche, Ghorepani, Lukla) that lack roads or factories.
  3. Youth Employment: Employs over 300,000 direct workers as mountain guides, porters, lodge managers, and agency executives.
  4. Artisan Preservation: Creates robust market demand for local pashmina, wood carvings, thangka paintings, and handwoven Dhaka textiles.

TU Exam Trap: Do not write that "Mount Everest is the only tourist attraction in Nepal"! While mountaineering is world-famous, cultural tourism in Kathmandu Valley, pilgrimage in Lumbini/Muktinath, and wildlife safaris in Chitwan generate far higher total visitor volumes than summit climbing expeditions.

Students lose marks here because they write that \Mount Everest is the only tourist attraction in Nepal.
