Unit 1: Introduction· 5 LHs· ~6 marks

Part 1: Core Concepts (2 Marks)

  • Scarcity & Choice: The fundamental economic problem that society has insufficient productive resources to satisfy all human wants, necessitating choice and generating opportunity cost.
  • Microeconomics vs Macroeconomics: Microeconomics analyzes the economic decision-making of individual units (consumers, firms, markets); Macroeconomics analyzes economy-wide aggregate phenomena (national GDP, inflation, unemployment, fiscal/monetary policy).
  • Opportunity Cost: The value of the next best alternative forgone when a decision is made to allocate scarce resources to a chosen option.

Part 2: Structural Frameworks (10 Marks)

Production Possibility Curve (PPC) Architecture

  1. Capital Goods ^ A (Efficient Point on frontier) * \ \ C (Infeasible / Unattainable with current tech) \ * \ B * (Underutilization / Unemployment) +------*---------------
  2. Consumer Goods 0

Marginal Rate of Transformation: MRTxy=−ΔYΔXMRT_{xy} = -\frac{\Delta Y}{\Delta X}. The concave shape reflects increasing opportunity costs.

Part 3: Distinction Tables

Basis of Comparison Microeconomics Macroeconomics
Scope of Study Individual consumer, firm, or specific industry market. National aggregates: GDP, inflation, unemployment, balance of payments.
Core Mechanism Price mechanism (Demand and Supply equilibrium). National income analysis and aggregate demand/supply.
Business Application Product pricing, cost minimization, input optimization. Forecasting business cycle shifts, exchange rates, interest trends.

Part 4: Worked Problems & Exam Traps

Opportunity Cost Decision Archetype

A software firm in Kathmandu has 4 developers. If assigned to App A, they generate NPR 1,200,000 revenue. If assigned to App B, they generate NPR 950,000.

  1. Chosen alternative: App A (Revenue = NPR 1,200,000).
  2. Opportunity cost: NPR 950,000 (value of next best forgone option, App B).
  3. Economic Profit =1,200,000−950,000=NPR 250,000= 1,200,000 - 950,000 = \text{NPR } 250,000.

Do not sum all alternative values when calculating opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is strictly the value of the single next best alternative, not the sum of all rejected alternatives!
