Course Description

:

This course provides students with fundamental concepts and practical skills in applying computer technology to financial accounting and managerial decision-making. It covers computer hardware and software basics, electronic spreadsheets (Excel) with PivotTables, Management Information Systems (MIS), office automation, specialized financial and accounting application software, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and the strategic business value of information systems.

Unit 1. Introduction to Computer Systems and Technology

  • Concept, characteristics, and historical evolution of computers
  • Computer hardware components: Input, processing (CPU), output, and storage devices
  • Primary memory (RAM vs. ROM, cache memory) and secondary storage media
  • Computer software: System software (operating systems) vs. application software

Unit 2. Spreadsheets for Accounting and Financial Analysis

  • Spreadsheet fundamentals: Workbooks, worksheets, cells, cell referencing
  • Financial functions, logical functions, and statistical formulas
  • Data organization, sorting, filtering, and conditional formatting
  • PivotTables and PivotCharts: Concept, dynamic data summarization, multi-dimensional grouping
  • Generating financial statements and schedules using spreadsheets

Unit 3. Management Information Systems (MIS) and Office Automation

  • Concept, definition, and objectives of MIS
  • Major components of MIS: Hardware, software, data, procedures, people, networks
  • Role of MIS in managerial decision making across operational, tactical, strategic tiers
  • Office Automation Systems (OAS): Meaning, technologies, document management, and productivity benefits

Unit 4. Computerized Accounting Systems and Financial Applications

  • Meaning, features, and advantages of computerized accounting systems compared to manual systems
  • Core modules: Chart of accounts, general ledger, sales/receivables, purchases/payables, inventory, payroll
  • Audit trail, data security, user access controls, and backup procedures
  • Popular accounting software packages (e.g., Tally, QuickBooks, Swastik)

Unit 5. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems

  • Definition, architecture, and evolution of ERP
  • Core modules of ERP: Finance, HR, supply chain, CRM
  • Need for ERP in modern business; integration of departmental data flows
